First, we are seeing the bats!
Okay, be real with yourself, when was the last time you went and saw the bats?? I know people who have been living in Austin for nearly ten years who have not taken the time to do this staple item. In all honesty, it is incredible to watch the 2 million bats fill the skies.
So that is what we are doing first. We are channeling that inner tourist and making our way out to the Congress Bridge to watch the bats. Here’s what you need to know:
When do the bats take off? Unfortunately, this time varies a bit from night to night, but you can catch them around dusk! Typically 7:30-8ish. Also keep in mind that the best months to view the bats are between early March and late September.
Where do you view the bats? When it comes to viewing the bats taking flight in Austin, you've got a variety of fantastic options to choose from. First, standing on the iconic Congress Avenue Bridge, where you'll watch the thousands of bats soar out from beneath you. Alternatively, head over to the charming viewing area near the Austin Statesman, providing you with a comfortable spot to relax while gazing up at the bats flying above you.
But wait, there's more! For those seeking a truly unique perspective, consider paddleboarding or kayaking along the water, positioning yourself right beneath the bats as they take off. If you prefer a more leisurely approach, treat yourself to a bat cruise, where you can recline and watch in style.
Stack some Ws at Cidercade
Our next stop on this Austin adventure takes us just a short stroll down the street to the wonderland known as Cidercade. It’s a venue full of arcade games that'll send your nostalgia meter off the charts, and the best part? Unlimited plays are yours for $10! You can spend many many hours going through the large selection of games. And once it hits a certain time, all the kiddos have to leave and the adults get to take over.
Plus, Cidercade is more than just a gaming haven. It has a fantastic bar and you can step outside onto the deck, where you'll find yourself next to water and treated to a great view of the skyline.
Sing your heart out at Ego’s
Just a little farther down the street is a popular Austin bar that KNOWS how to have a good time - Ego’s Bar. This unassuming dive bar has earned its rightful place as a local favorite, and for one very good reason: it's home to the most fun karaoke scene in town.
Here at Ego's, you don’t have to sing on stage to have a good time. You can hear everyone in the bar singing along to the best tunes and laughing away with their crews. If you DO want to sing, make sure to put your name on the list as soon as you come in - tends to fill up quick!
Plus, it doesn’t close until 2AM - a really great alternative to a night out on 6th Street.
