A Local’s Favorite Austin Coffee Shops
Austin is arguably filled with some of the best coffee shops in the US. While there are dozens upon dozens to choose from, below I’ve listed out my top 10 (one of the HARDEST lists I’ve ever had to make in my life).
Keep in mind that this list is purely on my own preferences - not JUST the coffee. These places are my favorites because of the vibes, coffee choices, seating options/layout/aesthetic. But I promise, you won’t be disappointed adding these to your list:
1 —
Freddo ATX
This creaky old house has been transformed into the most charming coffee shop. There are multiple rooms to work from, couches to read from, and a fireplace to warm up with.
They serve Greece's most popular coffee, Freddo Cappucino. Along with many delicious food items such as Spanakopita (savory feta spinach pie), Tiropita (ham and cheese pie) and Greek Bougatsa (made with flaky Phyllo, dusted with cinnamon, powdered sugar and chocolate drizzle).
There is also ample outdoor seating and a variety of events that happen throughout the week including open mic night. Plus, they are dog friendly!
2 —
Flitch Coffee
This East Austin gem has been around for years and is operating out of a remodeled 1952 Spartan trailer. They work with local and national roasters for their coffees and collaborate with local bakers, retailers, vendors, and farms to bring quality products to us!
The way it is tucked away in a neighborhood makes it feel like old time Austin charm. They’ve recently expanded and have added on a huge covered outdoor seating area (a shared lot with the lumber mill next door). Even though this place is all outdoors, they do have wifi!
Plus, stop by East Austin Succulents afterwards to add more adventure to your day.

Try Hard Coffee Roaster
This East Austin spot is pop.u.lar. And how could it not be?! With the commitment to quality and passion for coffee, tasty breakfast tacos, disco ball patio, and music scene, this place will always be a happening spot.
When thinking of Try hard, think: the art of coffee roasting, specialty coffee, locally sourced, community engagement and shop experience.

Dear Diary
This place is so cool in my opinion. Stocked with items made by local artists and committed to support local small businesses, Dear Diary is proud of their role in the community and their ability to help entrepreneurs whenever they can. Some quick fun facts about Dear Diary include:
“Dear Diary’s menu brings together local favorites
They’ve partnered with Sightseer to bring you coffee from women-led farms, and roasted by women in Austin
They share retail space with over 40 local artists”
However, the coolest part about Dear Diary is that they have community journals that people can draw and write in. Make sure to spend some time flipping through the pages and adding in your own diary entry!

Nate’s Baked Goods and Coffee
Nate’s has become known for its delicious baked goods and high-quality coffee. This local establishment has garnered a loyal following and is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
Something about this place gets me going back over and over again. Maybe it’s the tasty treats, maybe it’s the strong coffee, or maybe the fact that the shop has character and is in a great location near Black Swan Yoga!

Plaza Colombian Coffee
This colorful and vibrant coffee shop specializes in Colombian coffee and cuisine. It aims to bring the authentic flavors of Colombia to the local community, offering a unique coffee experience and a taste of Colombian culture.
They also strive to create an ambiance that reflects the Colombian culture. The café features Colombian-inspired decor, music, and artwork, immersing customers in a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. The goal is to transport visitors to Colombia, even if only for a short time, by offering an authentic cultural experience alongside their coffee.
Indoor seating plus a huge outdoor seating area and in the evenings they have live music.
Plus, their empanadas are some of the best empanadas in Austin!

Maha Coffee
Maha Coffee quickly become one of my favorite coffee go-tos. Connected to a yoga studio, this place is complete zen. Their baked goods are phenomenal entirely gluten-free with dairy-free, nut-free & plant-based options too. The staff is literally always bringing sunshine to their customers days. You’ll feel pure joy after stopping by this spot.
Plus, if you enjoy matcha (unlike me LOL) I hear theirs can’t be beat!

Irie Bean Coffee and Wine Bar
Irie Bean is known for its combination of specialty coffee and a curated selection of wines. This place offers a unique and relaxed atmosphere and can be summed up with this:
Specialty Coffee
Wine Selection
Cozy Atmosphere
Community Events
Not going to lie, the main reason I like this spot is because of their hammocks in the backyard. It’s a little kooky of a spot and the eclectic decor makes it unique.

Barrett’s Micro Roast Coffee
If you know you know…
A spot where 90% of the customers are weekly regulars. The baristas know names and orders and you get a homey community feel. It’s also is a great place to get some work done if you’re needing new scenery during the work day.

Genuine Joe Coffee
Genuine Joe's is committed to serving high-quality coffee. They offer a variety of coffee options, including drip coffee, espresso-based drinks, pour-over brews, and more.
Cozy, homey, warm… dinosaurs… yup! I said dinosaurs. This place is so fun because of their collection of dinosaurs throughout the shop.
They also have a whole cabinet of games and tons of seating. And on colder days, I suggest their hot chocolate with whipped cream - it’s the best hot chocolate ever!
